CHINA TYPHOON MERANTI

Paramilitary policemen and cars pass by a mess of trees broken and uprooted by strong wind caused by Typhoon Meranti on a road in Xiamen city, southeast China's Fujian province, 15 September 2016. Typhoon Meranti slammed into southeastern China on Thursday (15 September 2016) with strong winds and lashing rain that cut power to 1.65 million homes. Media reported one death and one person missing in Fujian province in what has been described as the strongest storm of the year globally. One person died and 51 were injured in Taiwan, the Central Emergency Operation Center there said, as the typhoon hit the southern part of the island on Wednesday. The storm, registered as a super typhoon before losing strength after sweeping across southern Taiwan, made landfall in the early hours near Xiamen, capital of Fujian. Dozens of flights and train services were canceled, State television said, which disrupted travel at the start of the three day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.(Imaginechina via AP Images)

CHINA ARMED POLICE

--FILE--Armed Chinese paramilitary policemen take part in a training session in Ningbo city, east China's Zhejiang province, 26 February 2016. A proposal submitted to the National People's Congress seeks to expand the role of the armed police and put the force more firmly under the command of the Central Military Commission, a move analysts say would consolidate the power of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sun Sijing, political commissar of the armed police and a legislator attending the National People's Congress in Beijing, had proposed a legal amendment that would clear the way for the changes, PLA Daily reported this week. The amendment was aimed at ensuring the highest power of command was "firmly in the hands of the Communist Party's central leadership, the CMC and Chairman Xi," it said. The amendment has been under discussion since last June, according to the PLA Daily. The current armed police law, passed in 2009, states that the 660,000-strong force is under the dual leadership of the State Council and the CMC. It also requires the leadership to be shared by central and local commanders. The force is used by local governments to maintain domestic security, fight terrorism and manage social unrest.(Imaginechina via AP Images)

CHINA BEIJING SMOG

A Chinese paramilitary policeman stands guard on Tiananmen Square in heavy smog in Beijing, China, 8 December 2015. Much of northern China remains covered by thick hazardous smog as Beijing restricted the use of cars, shut schools and halted outdoor construction after issuing its highest-ever red pollution alert, which came into effect from 7am on Tuesday (8 December 2015). Half of all private cars have been taken off the capital's roads, which led to the Metro trains becoming particularly crowded during the morning rush, state broadcaster CCTV reported. At 11am, the city's air quality index, published by the municipal government, stood at 292 – classified as being a level of "heavy pollution". A number of neighbouring provinces, including Hebei and Henan, are also plagued by heavy smog, with "heavy pollution" or even "severe pollution" levels reported after air quality index readings of more than 300 were recorded. The city of Hengshui, in Hebei, recorded an air quality index level of 500 – the maximum level that can be measured by Chinese authorities.(Imaginechina via AP Images)
