Advanced Searches

The Advanced Search window allows you to specify various criteria to narrow your search results.

To perform an advanced search:

1. Click the Advanced link (next to the Search box) in the Search bar.

Result: The Advanced Search window appears.

2. Specify the following search criteria:

1. • Search Terms

     Enter a keyword search or search phrase. For more details on creating a search query, see Search Tools.

     Search Terms Examples
     President Obama Pakistan AND terrorists	premiere (movie OR film) B*ball

     Select the All of Any Boolean logical options to apply to a keyword search:

     • All. An implied AND command is used between each keyword — all keywords must appear in each item of your search results.

     Search Terms (All) Examples
     The search custody battle finds: Longest child custody battles Battling abuse in police custody	Trump battles custodian bank for fraud Viewers battled tears at premiere of "Custody"

     • Any An implied OR command is used between each keyword — at least one of the keywords must appear in each item in your search results.

     Search Terms (Any) Examples
     The search custody battle finds: Child custody case mismanagement Revolutionary war battle equipment	Trump battles O'Donnell and custodian banks Criminals taken into police custody

   • Arrived Within / Created Between

     To limit your search results to a specific arrival time period, select it from Arrived Within (Anytime, Today, Last Hour, Last 12, 24 or 48 Hours, Previous 7, 14, 30 Days, Previous 12 Months).

     To specify your own arrival date range, select Dated Between... Then, enter your start and/or end date.

   • People

     Enter the names of one or more people who are featured in your item.

   • Event / Group

     To find all items from a specific event, enter one or more words from the event's title. Click Group to group your images by events.

   • Source

     Enter one or more content creators; for example, AP, Kyodo News or Image Source.  Use a space or a comma (,) to separate individual sources.

   • Photographer

     To find all items from a specific photographer, enter the photographer's first and/or last name.

   • City / State / Country

     Specify the location where the item's subject occurs.

   • Search Section

     Select the landing page (media categories/subcategories) that corresponds to the type of content that you want to find (Examples: Images à All Editorial; Creative Photos à Royalty Free).

     For news-related media categories, additional news type options (Examples: All Editorial, AP Complete) appear below the Search Section menu to further filter your results. The number of options that appear (if any) is dependent on the media category.

   • Sort

     Select one of the following methods in which you want to display your search results:

     Newest	Display the latest items first.
     Oldest	Display the oldest items first.
     Recently Added	Display items that were recently added.
     Relevance	Display the most relevant (as ranked by the search engine) items first.
     Photographer	Display your items grouped by photographer.
     Event A-Z	Display the items in alphabetical order by event title.
     Event Z-A	Display the items in alphabetical order by event title.

   • Image IDs

     Enter the image ID number(s) assigned to your desired items. Use a space or a comma (,) to separate individual image ID numbers.

   • Orientation

     Select one of the following image orientations:

     Either	Find images of any orientation.
     Vertical	Find all portrait images.
     Horizontal	Find all landscape images.

   • Color

     Select one of the following film color options:

     Either	Find all items that were filmed in either color or black & white (older, historical films).
     Color	Find all items that were filmed in color only.
     B/W	Find all items that were filmed in black & white only.
