The former workhouse, which used to be the largest of its kind in the German state of Saxony, was opened on 03/04 April 1716 by Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony. The facility that spans around 5.3 hectares is now home to 400 prisoners and includes a printery, a bookbindery, a metalworking shop, a carpentry workshop and other facilities, which are supposed to help first offenders reintegrate into society.
