MULE TRAIN MAIL

ADVANCE FOR WEEKEND OF JULY 29-30--A string of mules heads toward the base of the Grand Canyon near Supai, Ariz., June 13, 2000. The U.S. Postal Service established the mail route in 1896, using a relay of trains, wagons and mules to get the mail delivered. The mail consists mostly of groceries and household needs for the residents of the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Earlier this year, one of the mules was bumped off the narrow steep zigzags of the trail and killed. That meant firewood needed to be collected to cremate the mule on the spot.
