YE BUSINESS 2006

An earthmover works the ground of the 5.8-million-square-foot Pillowtex Plant No. 1 on Wednesday Dec. 21, 2005 in Kannapolis, N.C. The plant, which closed in 2003 after thousands of Pillowtex workers lost their jobs in the state's largest single layoff, is being demolished to make way for a 350-acre biotech research campus that is the brainchild of California billionaire David Murdock. The project symbolizes the transformation of North Carolina's economy from one which once was largely dependent on manufacturing industries like textiles and furniture into a more diverse one that competes on a global stage.(AP Photo/Chris Keane)
