BRITISH BARRAGE BALLOONS

A line of Royal Air Force barrage balloons is suspended in the air, prior to ascending to their destined location, during a demonstration at Cardington, Bedfordshire, England, on May 10, 1938. These balloons, attached to a great length of cable, ascend high into the air and can be controlled from the ground. Enemy aircraft flying into the cable are destroyed. (AP Photo)
