MODEL RELEASED. Pregnancy supplements. Pregnant woman taking a tablet containing folic acid. Folic acid is very important for a developing foetus, as it helps protect against congenital malformations including neural tube defects. These can result in malformations of the spine (spina bifida), skull and brain. The risks of these defects occurring are significantly reduced when folic acid is consumed. The recommended daily intake of synthetic folic acid is 400 micrograms. This can be in the form of supplementary tablets or in certain recommended foods as part of a healthy diet.
