Documents of former chief aide to Emperor Hirohito

Photo taken Aug. 19, 2019, in Tokyo shows journals and notebooks of Michiji Tajima, who headed Japan's imperial household office from 1948 to 1953. The documents detailing exchanges between him and Emperor Hirohito, posthumously known as Emperor Showa, show that the emperor wanted to express regret and remorse over World War II in a speech in 1952 but was stopped from doing so by then Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida.
