Federal President Steinmeier in memory of Fivizzano

25 August 2019, Italy, Pisa: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier bows down from an airplane of the German Armed Forces Air Readiness at the military airport of Pisa to an honorary member with the Italian flag in order to travel on to Fivizzano. In the final phase of the Second World War, Wehrmacht soldiers and SS murdered several thousand civilians in Italy. 75 years ago, in the region around Fivizzano in northern Tuscany alone, almost 400 men, women, old people and children were murdered by the Germans, often in an unimaginably cruel way, in a massacre lasting several days. Federal President Steinmeier and his wife take part in the annual commemoration ceremony for the victims of the massacre. Photo by: Bernd von Jutrczenka/picture-alliance/dpa/AP Images
