Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan

An aerial photo shows the Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant in Okuma Town, Fukushima Prefecture on Feb. 21, 2020. Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant suffered major damage from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011. The chain of events caused radiation leaks and permanently damaged several reactors, making them impossible to restart. By political decision, the remaining reactors were not restarted. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami happened on March 11, 2011, and included both a humanitarian crisis and massive economic impacts. The tsunami created over 300,000 refugees in the Tōhoku region of Japan, and resulted in shortages of food, water, shelter, medicine and fuel for survivors. 15,898 deaths have been confirmed as of Sep. 2019.
