Meteorite collections in Halle

03 February 2020, Saxony-Anhalt, Halle: Thomas Degen, head of one of the oldest meteorite collections in Germany, stands on the grounds of the University of Halle. The collection was founded in 1866 and is therefore one of the oldest meteorite collections in Germany. The pieces come from all over the world. The about 4.6 billion years old meteorites are the only witnesses of the origin of our solar system. Impacts of meteorites in the earth are very rare. The last meteorite impact in the area of Saxony-Anhalt occurred in 1985 near Salzwedel. Photo by: Jan Woitas/picture-alliance/dpa/AP Images
