Monument commemorates US soldiers

01 September 2020, Saxony, Leipzig: Julia Hozakowska, Consul of the USA, speaks at the inauguration in front of the "Memorial at the Rock Cellar" for seven dead from the last days of World War II. The memorial is to commemorate the five American soldiers who burned to death in their tanks on the morning of 18.4.1945 when they reached the intersection of Zschochersche Strasse/Karl-Heine-Strasse after being hit by a bazooka. The gunmen, two youths of the so-called "Volkssturm", died in the Americans' backfire. Photo by: Jan Woitas/picture-alliance/dpa/AP Images
