Praying Mantis

Praying Mantis

A praying mantis, or praying mantid, hanging out on the wall of a home in the Yuma Valley, Ariz.,gets into a staredown with a photographer on a recent February afternoon. By any name, these fascinating insects are formidable predators, according to nationalgeographic.com. Moths, crickets, grasshoppers, flies, and other insects are usually the unfortunate recipients of unwanted mantid attention. Mantids scan their surroundings with two large compound eyes and three other simple eyes located between them. (Randy Hoeft/The Yuma Sun via AP)
