101-Year-Old Is Last Surviving D-Day Surgeon World War II hero Dr Clifford Brewer is the last surviving surgeon of the D-Day landings. Brave veteran Clifford, 101, saved almost 1000 troops during his nine month stay in France, carrying out an average of 20 surgical procedures every day in the aftermath of the attack. Clifford, who gained his surgery fellowship aged 20, had spent the first four years of the war in the deserts of Egypt from March 1940, having trained at the Oxford territorial unit in 1939. Upon arrival in Normandy he was assigned number 12 out of the 12 Field Surgical Units (FSU) which attached themselves to aid stations across the front line. Each FSU unit, which included one surgeon, one anaesthetist, and eight other ranks, carried two lorries containing a complete operating theatre. Clifford, who was 31 at the time of D Day, said: "It is and it isn't a big thing. I was the youngest so therefore all the others are now dead. "I am nearly 102 now but still remember them. We all knew one another. It was extremely hard work. "We would work for 15 hours straight before having a four hour rest. On average we would do 200 cases before moving somewhere else along the front line. "It did not bother me at all, I was very used to it as I had been all around the world during the war. "My role was to help everybody. We treated the Canadians, Americans, British and Germans. It was reciprocal - everyone helped everyone. "The Germans all liked me as my grandmother was from Germany, we had a good rapport. The surgeries I did were very bloody but quite interesting. "I dealt mainly with abdominal injuries.
