Jalisco Sinking 1966

Waves smash over the freighter Jalisco as it sank in the Pacific 110 miles off San Diego, Nov. 16, 1966. Actor Joe Kirkwood, who starred as the movies’ “Joe Palooka,” was one of four men swept off the 7,000-ton ship when it sank after hitting a reef. Kirkwood clings to a flagpole at bow at extreme left, just before he was carried into the sea by waves. All four men on the ship were rescued. Kirkwood and associates were taking the old freighter to a reef where they intended to sink her and start a man-made Island, with the ship as the core. (AP Photo)
