Man-Powered Flight

Inventor Willard E. Blain, harnessed to his man-powered ornithopter, is shown before he attempted to take off against a 25 mph wind in a trial of his contraption, in New London, Conn., Feb. 1, 1932. The ornithopter weighs 40 pounds and and has a wingspan of 22 feet. The wing movements are controlled by extended arms and the tail by the legs. When in flight, the pilot is horizontal, like a flying bird. (AP Photo)
