Labor John L Lewis

John L. Lewis, dynamic head of the CIO and United Mine Workers, with his aide, Phillip Murray, Jan. 12, 1938 in New York as he emerged from a conference with Thomas L. Moses of the U.S. Coal and turned to reporters to comment on an apparent rift in the CIO leadership. To assertions by David Dubinsky, president of one of the CIO's strongest affiliates, the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union, that Lewis' organization was responsible for breakdown in CIO-AFL peace negotiation. Lewis bluntly replied he thought Dubinsky ought to "decide whether he is flesh or fowl or good red herring." (AP Photo)
