Sir James Jeans

Sir James Jeans, noted British astronomer, arrives in New York by ocean liner, en route to Pasadena, Calif., April 29, 1931. While in Pasadena, he will meet with professor Robert Andrew Millikan and other scientists. Sir James said that California, with its Mt. Wilson Observatory and other attractions, was rapidly becoming the Mecca for scientists the world over. On May 20 he will receive from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pa., the Franklin Medal, the highest award for physical sciences in the U.S. (AP Photo)
