WWII France Paris La Place de L'Opera

The bank at one of the most famous corners, on La Place de L'Opera in Paris on Oct. 31, 1940, now is occupied by quarters of the nazi commander of the city outside, where peacetime traffic often was jammed by noisy taxicabs and crowded busses, there is ample room in the Paris of late 1940 for bicycle traffic. Bikes now sell in Paris for about $50. Parisians either use these, or travel by the subway. (AP Photo)
