Happy internee family roasting coffee beans on an improvised outdoor stove, their only means of cooking during the 3 ½ years of their internment in camp Stanley on the Island of Hong-Kong, China, Oct. 1, 1945. Coffee beans were a luxury to these half-starved inhabitants who on occasions were restricted by the Japanese to one quart of water every five days the picture show Mrs. Parkin of Czechoslovakia (cooking) with her little son Leslie (hand in mouth). Father was killed by the Japanese at the battle of Stanley Hill. Also Mr. S. Smith, center, and his sons. Formerly of Ewell, he has been an Inspector Frser, also of the Hong Kong Police (back left).
