Romania Germans in National Costume

Some of the 800,000 Germans who live in Romania’s mountain areas. The Hungarians imported them at intervals for 700 years from the Rhineland and Saxon to do skilled manual work and fight off the barbarians. They still speak old German and are Luterans. The men and women are not giving the Nazi salute but the Roman salute of a new government co-operative in Mercurea Sibiu, on Jan. 24, 1939. (AP Photo)
