SEGREGATIONIST VIOLENCE

Ruins of Mt. Mary Baptist church stand in Sasser, Ga. Sept. 9, 1962 after it burned down in a suspected arson attack earlier in the day. Flames also damaged a second church a few miles to the west. Black youth leaders in the area blamed segregationists for the fires. Sasser is eight miles southeast of Dawson, Ga. where a few days earlier, gunfire ripped into a house, wounding a young white man, a member of an interracial group working to register black voters. Four black homes in the area were also targeted. (AP photo/fls)
