U.S. SHARECROPPERS MEETING

Owen D. Hitefield, preacher and labor organizer, addresses a meeting of sharecroppers in their camp near Popular Bluff, Mo., Nov. 9, 1939. They congregate on the site of what is to be the community's proposed church, school and meeting house. The colony, made up of 200 African Americans and a few Caucasians, is the remnants of hundreds of sharecroppers who staged a roadside demonstration in southeastern Missouri in January to protest their low economic status.
