Dust Bowl Refugees

Keeping clean in this poor home is a problem for the children of Kansas dust refugees who have settled on Oregon, near Portland shown on June 7, 1938. It’s hard to be neat in the overcrowded quarters of a one-room vent shack, but this little girl insisted upon blacking her shoes, as her brother looks on. The father, one of several hundred family heads, is clearing a small tract to pay for his tenancy. (AP Photo)
