Radiation Effects

Roberto Santos Alves, 17, sits in the window of his isolated hospital room in Brasilia, Brazil on Sept. 13, 1987, Alves, scavenging for junk, found a 300-pound lead capsule in an abandoned building. He and a friend carried it to Alves’ backyard and smashed it open. Inside the capsule was cesium 137, a radioactive substance used in cancer treatment. It contaminated 249 people in all.
