Tsitsihar, China

Street scene in Tsitsihar, capital of the northern province of Heilungkiang, China, which fell into the hands of the Japanese on Nov. 18, 1931, for the first time in its 200 years of history. The Japanese troops marched in through the western gate while General Mah Chan-Shan, the Chinese commander, who has been an outstanding figure for years in provincial politics fled northward by rail in the direction of Koshan. Reports indicated that the Japanese were bringing up reinforcements intending to assume full control on November 19. (AP Photo)
