WWII France

Desolation marks the once beautiful Rhone River at Tarascon in Southern France on Sept. 9, 1944. Wrecked bridges, effectively bombed by the Allied to hinder the German retreat, are a grim reminder of the destruction that accompanies war. Dock marks in the lets between bridges show where Allied bombs missed their target. At left is a castle-like building one of many that dot the countryside in Southern France.
