View of a Japanese Farm

A view of a Japanese farm, which is below sea level, about 40-miles east of Osaka, Japan on Nov. 5, 1952. It is part of a small area near the tip of the Kii peninsula which is sown with a plant called “chrysanthemum cornarium”. Its leaves are used by the Japanese in cooking and as a garnish. In front an elderly woman, wearing a typical country hat, kneels in the neatly plowed rows to sow the seed. Behind her the farmer waters the ground from wooden tubs on a yoke. In the background are windmills which catch the breezes from the Kii channel and pump the water up from wells into ponds, from which it is scooped up by the wooden tubs. (AP Photo)
