Commander Richard E. Byrdís huge tri-motored plane, The America, in the water off Ver Sur Mer, France in June 1927 where he crash landed after flying through three storms on a flight from New York. Bernt Balchen and George Noville had taken off from Roosevelt Field on June 29, 1927. Their goal was Paris but after 43 hours and 21 minutes in the air, bad weather forced them down on the French Coast. (AP Photo)
